Statement of Educational and Career Goals

“I am an 18-year-old student from the West Wendover High School, in West Wendover. The career I want to seek in life is being a professional artist. Pursuing art does not seem like a critical profession to follow, but art has constantly been an essential factor in our history. Based on precedents, we learn about different cultures and what they’ve encountered to know about our present periods. As art is captured throughout history we catch current historical occasions that will be viewed later in life.

I desire to be an artist because I want society to think about their lifestyle when they look at my craft. As people look at my art, I want them to engage with it, whether it’s making them question their ways of life or smile. I want my art to have a meaning in their life by how they choose to define it. Art is essential to my life but with subjects that I am going to surround myself with I think it’s important to understand these subjects from a different perspective and that is what fine arts have done. With the art classes that I have taken my mind is open to something deeper than the actual meaning. I don’t want to be put in one position but to learn many areas of Education.

I have prepared to continue my profession by taking extra art classes throughout my high school career. In addition, I have taken steps to attempt and better myself with the artwork and projects I do. I was born with an artistic gift and decided to challenge myself by taking additional classes to learn about the famous and iconic masterpieces to understand our past a little more. I write and draw with my mouth which brings challenges but art has given peace to my disabilities. Due to my disabilities, I don’t have work experience but I hold the same responsibilities with the services I do around my community.

I am also challenging myself by signing up for projects around my community. An experiment I recently participated in was developing a mural on the West Wendover Recreation building as a Wendover Youth Prevention Coalition member. It is a mural that represents two states in one city. There are unique factors from both West Wendover, NV, and Wendover, UT that make a special community painted in the mural. Another agenda I am currently working on is designing a billboard for my high school. This piece represents the pride West Wendover students can have. Doing these projects has prepared me to go into a profession that I love, and I only want to become better. I am a member of the student council, National Honors Society, and a handful of clubs and have dealt with a great amount of involvement in my high school. I am a quadriplegic which means I can’t be as involved in projects as I’d like but always show up with a smile on my face ready to help in any way I can.

After maintaining my education I would like to build a gallery for my community. I would like to dedicate a period to students who have shown commitment to art and display their works of art in the gallery to show the talent the community has. It only gives me hope that helping my community open up to art helps someone overcome their hardships.”
